The white crescent shows on my finger nails from years of picking at my cuticles, how do I get it to grow back?

At the base of your nail is the white crescent, which I have now read is called the germinal matrix. About 1/4 of an inch of mine is exposed, which is way more than most people. Now that I take care of my nails, my cuticles don't seem to be growing back over them. Does anyone know how to make your cuticles grow back? The white crescent shows on my finger nails from years of picking at my cuticles, how do I get it to grow back?
I can't imagine anyone not be proud of having crescents showing on their fingernails. I sure wish I did. They're beautiful.

My hands are extremely DIRTY!!! Literally. My cuticles are black, as are my nails. Tips on cleaning?

Today I picked tomatoes from 7-3 in a hot, swampy, muddy field. At the end of it all, my hands were literally black! (I'm a white person). My right hand is several shades darker than my left, since that's the hand I picked with. My cuticles are black, and my nails are black underneath. The surface of my nails even has dirt ingrained in little lines - the nailbed is yellow. That's how dirty my hands are. I've washed them repeatedly, scrubbed them with several exfoliants, used a pumice stone, washed my hair, swum in a pool, dipped them in hydrogen peroxide....nothing is working....my hands are still a greyish brown and my nails are disgusting....HELP!!! I have to go to a more civilized place looking decent and clean tomorrow! My hands are extremely DIRTY!!! Literally. My cuticles are black, as are my nails. Tips on cleaning?
Get you a bar of Lava soap, most grocery stores carry it...My hands are extremely DIRTY!!! Literally. My cuticles are black, as are my nails. Tips on cleaning?
well, you can try dish detergeant--that's pretty good for getting things clean. try soaking your hands in hot (not uncomfortably so) water, like a bath or something. for your nails, cut them shorter so it's easier to get deep down in there, and scrub them with a scrub brush and soap. good luck!
My grandpa, a lifetime vegetable farmer, taught me to finish up by choosing an over-ripe tomato and smush it up in your hands and wash with that. It's good for removing the tomato stains.
Buy a bottle of Dawn Foam dish detergent and let some of it stay on your hands for 15 min. Then put on some water and scrub with a brush.

A good treatment with shampoo will also do a good job.
Soak them in Epsom salts to loosen the dirt. Scrub them well and take a shower, shampoo your hair, that should help.
a good home made scrubber is mix raw sugar with lemon juice,
As a former cosmetologist and make up artist, I think I can help you. First of all, apply a liberal dose of moisturizer and let it soak in a bit. If you have a face soap called Cetaphil, all the better. Put it on a little heavy and rub it in and wait about 15 minutes. Using a nail brush, one of those little brushes for scrubbing your hands and nail beds, wash with a liquid dish soap in warm (not hot or cold). You may have to do this more than once. What has happened, is your hands have ABSORBED the grime and dirt and sediments from the tomatoes and environment you were in. If you hydrate your hands with lotion, it will help to remove the discoloration. If that doesn't work, you can try some lemons, squeezed and applied to your hands with some lotion, let sit for 15 minutes and remove with some hand soap. The lemon acts as an acid to help remove the discoloration and the lotion will help bring the dirt up where it can be washed away. You can even put lotion on your hands and cover with plastic gloves and go to bed, and in the morning, try and remove any remaining dirt that might be present, if any is actually left. This really should remove the discoloration and filth from your hands enough to be presentable. Hope this helps you! Good luck!

Y R my cuticles super thick; finger nails have vertical ridges; thumbnails have horizontal bumps & bubbles?

About a year ago, my cuticles and fingernails changed dramatically. I have always had tendancies towards horizontal bumps in my thumbnails and fingernails that would sort of curl down in places...but there have been long periods of time where they were long, beautiful and perfect. But a year ago, they started getting thick vertical ridges, some even splitting vertically. My thumbnails now have thick and thin places that seem to come from horizontal bumps...they are really weird. I also have these bubble like things in one thumbnail that actually peels in the middle of it, and a vertical ridge in the same spot can even cause it to split vertically in the middle of the nail. I must have some deficiency or something. Perhaps low thyroid? It has gotten worse...and my cuticles are super thick now and I have less feeling in them. I even have to trim them with clippers because they get so thick all around my nail bed and the sides. I hope someone can tell me what I can do about it!Y R my cuticles super thick; finger nails have vertical ridges; thumbnails have horizontal bumps %26amp; bubbles?
sounds like a fungus. Go to the dermatologist and get it looked at. simple meds could fix. My aunt hadsomethinglike that... not as severe. She got it from gardening without usig gloves. It went a way with meds.Y R my cuticles super thick; finger nails have vertical ridges; thumbnails have horizontal bumps %26amp; bubbles?
Sounds like it could be a deficiency or maybe a side effect from medication.

Also, do you ever get your nails done, with acrylics or other materials? I would do my nails with press ons and acrylics every week and I started to get dips and ridges in my nails.
Hi

i have the exact same thing...

let me guess, your cuticles aren't only thick, but extremely dry as well? so dry they crack sometimes and you have to trim them off?

I've always been told its just my eczema and it's actually under the nail in the nailbed. I know that ridges in the nails can mean a deficiency - i think either zinc or keratin from orange vegetables like carrots and red/orange peppers.

i have not yet found a way to get rid of it.

I also take a few corticosteroids for asthma/allergies...i've been on corticosteroids for as long as i can remember, and my nails have also been the way they are as long as i can remember.

So, i don't really have an answer for why it's happening...but if you have eczema/psoriasis and/or you're on corticosteroids, maybe that's it.

What i do to hide it is just file and buff my nails. Right on the bed of the nail. The trick is not filing too much because, like you said, there are thin spots.

sometimes when the thin spots get really bad i get press on nails. I only put glue around the edges of the nail so that i dont run the risk of breaking the thin spot. That at least offers protection because they get VERY sensetive to the touch.

if you find any similarities in my story, let me know. I've been trying to figure this one out too, and doctors have been no help at all.

Where does hair grow from? The head or the end of old hair? Where do nails grow from? The cuticles or ends??? ?

What I'm trying to ask is when your hair grows, where does the new hair come from? Does the new hair come from the head, or the ends? If you are not sure, and you have/had your hair died before, you can find out the answer easily. If you had black hair and you died it brown, and month later, did you see black hair closer to your head or the ends of your hair? If the black hair is closer to your head that means that new hair grows from your head.

I am very curious to find out the answer to this question, so please answer it. If possible support your answer with a reliable website. Thanks.Where does hair grow from? The head or the end of old hair? Where do nails grow from? The cuticles or ends??? ?
Where does the tree grow from?

The root.

Our hair and nails grow from the root. The roots of your hair are under the skin. The roots of your nails are under the cuticle. It is in the root of the hair and nails where the new nail or hair is grown. The hair that you see is really just lots of dead cells joined together, same thing goes with your nails. The white part at the tip of your nail is all dead cells.Where does hair grow from? The head or the end of old hair? Where do nails grow from? The cuticles or ends??? ?
Both hair and nails grow from the base (follicles in the scalp and the cuticles respectively). The part of the hair and nails that you can see is dead material; the living part is inside, under your skin.

Thus your original hair color will start to appear at the base of your dyed hair.
first of all, trees grow from the ends. not the root.

you hair on the other hand, grows from the follicle in your scalp.
your hair grows form your head and your nails grow from your cuticle.
I don't want to be mean, but that has to be hands down one of the stupidest questions I have ever heard.
are you serious?

im 23 female! My cuticles are really bad..my nails are strong but all around gets really bad?
I agree with the person above me saying you need to keep your cuticles moisturized, however, don't even bother spending the extra money for vitamin E or any other 'special' oils to do so.

Use my secret ingredient which is cheap and works wonders! It's plain old 'vaseline'. Trust me it works!

I know you're thinking it can be messy and greasy, but if you do what I do, you won't notice the greaseness and you'll notice improvements over night!

All you have to do is simply apply a little (a little goes a long way) all around your fingernails right before you go to sleep! In the morning, you'll be amazed at how well they look!

Do this every night and you'll see how well your cuticles will look. People will think you see a manicurist regularly and spend tons of money doing so!!!My cuticles are really bad..my nails are strong but all around gets really bad?
you need to keep them moisturized.. i would recommend applying vitamin e oil around the cuticles once or twice a day... once moisturized, they won't peel and flake.
put lotion on your hands and make sure you trim them. frink plenty of water this will help. let up on the pop
    u need to cut them.
My cuticles were bad too and I also used to bite them. The cure is soaking them every night in either olive oil or almond oil, best of Luck!
I also have this problem, try Burt's Bee's Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream,it works great on cuticles.

I feel your pain! I also bit my nails and cuticles as a nervous habit. =(

But 2 things that helped me out greatly... Neosporan to patch the broken skin, and olive oil to soften the skin.

    Brittle nails?

';So, if you are like me, you somtimes have dry hair and/or brittle nails. If I am looking for a home treatment for dry hair, I microwave some olive oil and apply it to my hair and let it sit for a bit. This is what I call my Home Hot Oil Treatment:

    1/8 cup olive oil

    a few sprigs of lavender

    shampoo

    shower cap

    towel

I put the olive oil in a pan on medium heat. It takes about 2 minutes to get hot. Then I add the lavender. I let it sizzle in the pan for about 3-5 minutes. Then I take out the lavender and let the oil cool a bit before I apply it to my hair. I usually let it cool for 5 minutes. Before I apply it to my hair I wash my hair thoroughly. Then I apply the oil to my hair (I try to put a little extra on my ends) and put on a shower cap to let the oil condition my hair. You can do it my mother鈥檚 way, and wrap a towel around your head over the shower cap. That makes it get REALLY hot up there! The oil is supposed to be good for dry hair and dandruff. I like the lavender because it smells really nice. Also, it supposedly calms the nervous system and helps you relax.

    So, I actually do not have brittle nails. From what I hear there is some evidence that vitamin B may help with brittle nails. Since, I take vitamin B every morning that could be the reason I do not have this problem. According to the NIH (National Institutes of Health), low levels of zinc and iron can contribute to this problem. So, a nice multi vitamin or vitamin supplements may help. Then, of course, there is the old school method of strengthening nails鈥ating more gelatin ';

My nails are flaky and cuticles are long, help?

How can I help my nails and what causes them to do this? My nails are flaky at the ends and it's kind of grossing me out. Plus, my curticles are very long. I get a manicure from my sister, and latley she's been noticing that their beggining to flake a bit. It's been getting worse. She pushes back the cuticle everytime she does my nails but they just keep growing like crazy! I mean, the're about an inch long.

    And Further Advice?

Thank you so much.My nails are flaky and cuticles are long, help?
You need to take more vitamins. Especially vitamin E.

You can buy vitamin E oil at your regular grocery store. I have the same problem and I use the oil right before bed. It really helps with the flaking. I would keep cutting your nails until they aren't as long so that the flaking doesn't continue up the nail. It's better if you just cut it all off.My nails are flaky and cuticles are long, help?

What can I do about my ridged fingernails? Ridges go down my nails to the cuticles and they split and break!?

My cuticles look ragged even though I use handcream and my nails look short and all different sizes. I used to have nice long nails but can't get them to grow and they look horrible, especially in the winter. I've tried different nail strengthening polishes and I take the vitamins recommended for the condition.

Has anyone had this problem and sorted it out? I'd be really interested to know if you've used either a cream, polish, herbs or homeopathic remedy that has worked.

Thanx 4 your help. xWhat can I do about my ridged fingernails? Ridges go down my nails to the cuticles and they split and break!?
Nail Polish stops the oxygenation in the nail making them yellow, buff and polish naturally, maybe its and the lack of Iron in your diet, but thats a guess go to a diet doctor and find that one out.

To make them grow stronger eat Jelly (Jell-o if American) because of the gelatin it will help with the strength, also cut and file down (this helps to thicken and strengthen) for a while until your nails are back to how they one were!

All the Best. What can I do about my ridged fingernails? Ridges go down my nails to the cuticles and they split and break!?
It does sound like some form of vitamin deficiency but popping pills is not the answer food is the best way of providing vitamins change your diet to obtain the vitamins you need but the change wont be instant as nails grow about a millimetre a week so it could be four months before your nails are back to their former glory
ridges in your nails is often caused by deficiencies in vitamins and calcium.

Try inproving your diet and dont paint your nails unless its with a protector. Keep them short until the problem is solved. Long nails with ridges in them look awful so keep them shorter.

Do Silk Wrap Nails have to be sanded around the cuticles like acrylics or gels?

And does nail polish stay as good on them as it does on acrylics or gels? I'm trying to find an alternative to my nails (which will not grow, or hold polish), and to the acrylics and gels that have to be sanded around the cuticle (because I always seem to get nicked with the sander, and I don't want to take the chance of getting infected or an infection).

Thanks in advance....Do Silk Wrap Nails have to be sanded around the cuticles like acrylics or gels?
actually yes they do so they can be smooth....all nail enhancements have to be filled in some way....if you are getting knicked with the drill then you can request them not to use the drill.....and if you're getting knicked then chances are the person you're going to wasnt trained on how to properly use the electric file.....so if you MUST go to this person request they hand file everything....its not the nail enhancement that wont hold the polish 9 times outta 10 the polish is too old or the tech is not using a good base coat....for polish to adhere to the nail longer a good base coat should be used something like a tacky base coat makes the polish adhere to the nail better

In that case you gotta apply cuticle oil over the damaged zone, and that is gonna solve it. you may get it from ysnails for a low price and they come with good smells. Good luck!

ooooh... i don't like that part, or that terrible 'pushing back' tool. And it's worse, when they cut them off with a cuticle trimmer. ouch!

I'm not a professional manicurist, but maybe,so they don't turn into hangnails...and so it appears clean looking, and gives them more of a nail to paint.

How to get stronger nails and keep cuticles back?

I eat healthy, and paint my nails with OPI and revlon nail polish, i use a nail strengthening coat underneath and a clear topcoat. I am a vegetarian, so I cannot eat gelatin, which I know is good for the nails, and I already take calcium pills. However, my nails always chip and fall apart. Also, I push back my cuticles before I paint my nails, and also every morning because they go back. Try putting on something called Orly Nail Defense as a base coat before you paint your nails, or you can use it alone. You can also apply cuticle oil on your nail bed before you go to sleep. I hope this helps! How to get stronger nails and keep cuticles back?
buy a little tin of Burt's Bees cuticle cream then before you go to bed every night rub it into your cuticles nail and basically the whole tip of your finger then push the cuticles back (it works best if you dont wear nail polish)

I bite my cuticles and skin around my nails A LOT! Help?

Ok. I have done it for like 2+ years. I do it until it hurts and bleeds. I used to bite my nail, I still rarely, but my cuticles are the victim. I've tried nail polish and tabasco sauce, no good. I've recently started tape but it takes too much effort and it looks weird. People always ask me why my fingers are bloody and I just make an excuse. Recently I have been telling them I have an addiction. I really want to stop. Normally, it's sub-concious, I don't notice when I'm doing it. When I do, I stop, but normally in 2 seconds I'm back at it. Sometimes I do it because I feel that my fingers are disgusting with a piece of skin jutting out and I have to take it off, but then I just make more skin jut out. I also seem to do it when I am bored. I can't get into gum chewing, not a fan of it. I know there are dieseses(sp?) but that dosn't help. Please, put serious answers, no ';EWWWW'; nonsense. Thank you.I bite my cuticles and skin around my nails A LOT! Help?

me too. :( but i don't bite my cuticles i bite the skin around it and pull it off and scratch at it and clip with finger nail clippers. and that bad tasting liquid works for like 2 seconds and then goes away.
Working in the salon business for many years I learned one thing. Your nails are the #1 dirt est thing in the world. They are like sponges and hold on to every bit of bacteria. YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.......how do those cuticle taste now?
put nail polish on that tastes realllyyyyyy bad that u cant stand it and u dont bite ur nails.
Try clear nailpolish that has a taste when you bite it. It tastes HORRIBLE (my sister has tried it) and you will never bite your nails with it on.
Sounds like you have a obsession with your cuticles and skin around the fingernails. You should try out for a manicure at the salon, and use your 'INNER STRENGTH' to leave your fingernails alone, from more grief and privy eyes will ask you Q's...Keep yourself busy from being bored that you have to look at your nails...A friend of mine had this problem, she tried putting her fingers in a bowl of dishwashing soap for 10 minutes, about an hour later she started to bite her nails and spat out in digust of the taste of the dishwashing soap...She now has awesome nails ever....

Again someone above mentioned that your fingernails do pick up germs and who knows what else. Stay away from biting your nails at once! Don't want to see you get sicker, should you pick up a virus?

    Good luck mi amiga!
I doo this too - I have lovely long nails and massives sores at the side. I have noticed though for the first few days after a professional manicure I do it less though . Make sure you mositurise your hands alot as well - I have hand cream on my desk at work and use it 5/6 times a day
I have dry cuticles that peel %26amp; are dry %26amp; scale. I have found that pushing my cuticles back %26amp; painting my nails with a clear nail polish helps.
try cuticle oil to actually remove them, and either you'll stop, or when you do it they wont bleed?...
Have you ask your doctor help take care this. he know what you need. IT be good ask him .I try there before put some thing on make you so very sick and might get very bad infection........that be real bad......
There's a type of liquidthat tastes HORRIBLE and if you bite your nails after you apply it, trust me, you will NEVER want to bite your nails/cuticles again!

    Good Luck! :)
I bite my nails and cuticles NOT STOP! Its a habit...but i dont really care...i can stop i have a lot but i just like it...Hope this helped!
    nailpolish. coat the stuff on. alllll over. but like, do it over the weekend or sometime when not a lot of people are going to see it cuz u dont wanna be like ';HEY LOOK AT MY CRAPPY NAILPOLISH JOB!!! but dont worry!! im just trying to stop biting my nail/cuticles!!';
How about going for a proper manicure? Once your cuticles have been treated correctly, they won't feel so annoying.

Ragged cuticles are very annoying, and hangnails catching on things make them feel odd and annoying enough to yank or chew right off!

I used to pick at my cuticles myself, but when I started to take better care of my hands and nails, I no longer had the need to do it.

Don't forget to use a good hand lotion or cream. Use at bedtime so it has overnight to soak in, and moisturise those dry and itchy cuticles. Another said use a cuticle cream, that too might help a lot.

Good luck, and I wish you wonderful hands and cuticles.
I used to that a lot, and it's also become sub-concious for me now. But my friend said she puts correction-fluid on itso she wouldn't bite them, but it doesn't work for me. Try it if it doesn't work, then you've gotta try hard to stop, they used to tell me that i will get fungus if i keep doing it, and it scares me. And I try as hard as possible to stop. And i don't do it often. Put any disgsting thing you hate on it.

I know how you feel. It hurts when they crack :S You really need to moisturize. A good time is at night before you go to bed and after washing your hands. If you have to wash dishes etc. use gloves. I know Burts Bee's makes an awesome body cream (you can find it in the natural section of grocery store) I prefer to use natural ingredients whenever i can. Jason Naturals also has great creams. Another thing you can try (dont laugh) wrap saran wrap around your skin and leave for atleast 20 minutes (with no creams on your hands). It helps keep the moisture in. Good luck. HELP PLEASE!!?
I read once that it takes about two weeks to see growth -- so if you are biting your nails at all, you are not going to get them where you want.

I was a nail biter for many years, and I know how hard it is to stop. Here is what helped me:

    1. Use hand cream several times a day.

    2. Put a tiny bit of olive oil in the palm of one hand and use that on your cuticles. It will both soften and help heal them. Castor oil will also work. Do this twice a day

    3. Use clear polish on your nails. A product like Sally Hanson ';Hard as Nails'; is really good -- there are probably other brands, too, but that's the one I know. It makes your nails harder, which makes you more aware of the biting so that will help you stop. Also, it is clear, so it doesn't look bad while your nails are still short.

    4. Do not cut your cuticles. When you wash your hands and when you use the oil, gently push the cuticles back with the towel you use to dry your hands.CUTiCLES AND NAiLS!!! HELP PLEASE!!?
For your cuticles I suggest Burt's bee's cuticle cream

    http://www.burtsbees.com/webapp/wcs/stor鈥?/a>

it softens the cuticles and try wearing a clear coat over your nails to curb you from biting them. Once you start caring for them and they become healthy they will grow.
For your cuticles just soak your hands in warm water for 5 minutes then get an orange stick and gently push them back. Then if needed trim them with nail clippers, you can buy specially shaped clippers for this and they don't cost much. They're actually really useful and not just a waste of money. Nail hardener helps make your nails stronger, it looks like clear nail polish and you can apply it every few days but don't worry too much about removing old coats as nail polish remover shouldn't be used so frequently anyway. For faster growing nails there's nail growtrh treatments that also look like cler nail polish, I've not tried them but they are supposed to work wonders.
You can get a cuticle softener for about $2 at Walmart.
    1. Stop biting your nails!!

    2. Get a good manicure. When you spend the money on a manicure and polish, and your hands look nice, you don't want to mess it up by picking and biting your nails and cuticles. Buy matching nail polish so you can touch it up. Have your nails done every week.

    3. Get a good thick hand lotion or cream. Use it after every time you wash your hands, and rub it into your nails and cuticles.

    4. Wear a thin pair of cotton gloves to bed after slathering lotion on your hands to soften your cuticles.

    5. If you think you can't afford a good lotion, use olive oil. But look in the grocery store; you can get a big bottle of good lotion for just a couple dollars if you don't buy a pricey brand name. Put some in a travel bottle for your purse.
There is special nail polish that helps your nails grow faster. You can buy it @ your local drug store. Good Luck
my best suggestion is to take prenatal vitamins. It will make your hair and nails better.
well first, no more biting, secondly milk doesn't make your nail grows faster. try vitamin A,C, and E. try buying a nail pusher, it a metal implement that looks like a lil shovel, and a fine buffer ( small block-like object that's not too rough) soak your nails in warm soapy water for about 3 mins, push your cuticles back with the pusher then buffer them and apply oil ( olive oil will do fine) rub it in and wash your hands with soap and water.
Try vitamin B12 because it helps grown healthy hair and nails....also stop biting them.... use an oil to soften the cuticle every other day to prevent the jagged look.
what ever you do don't waste your money on nail products that says it will help your nails grow faster. It is not possible to do so bbecause your nails are dead cells so whatever you put on your nails will just sit there. As for your cuticles you can try any oil or even some vaseline and a pair of thin cotton gloves to sleep.
either spend a lot of money on a manicure so you wont be tempted to bite your nails and ruin it or get bad tasting nail polish, they sell it you know?

as for my cuticles, sometimes i have periods when every single one has a hangnail. wait about a week and leave them alone, they'll look fine.

Sop biting nails and skin/cuticles around nails????

i have benn biting my nails, cuticles, and skin around nails since i was 5!! please help!! how do i stop!??Sop biting nails and skin/cuticles around nails????
I was just sitting here doing that!!

I have done it since i was 13. I don't know anyone else who does this. I bite the cuticle down to the first bend of the fingers. My thumbs are the worst. They all bleed and are sore. It is a nervous habit, a ';bored'; habit, and a ';driving'; habit!! The ONLY thing i found that has worked is to put fake nails on. (They don't have to be long and goofy looking, they can be super short) Then use lots of lotion during the day. Then at night, get latex gloves and load your hands up with vaseline, or good shea butter, or anything like that. Keep them on over night. After about a week, your fingers will be awsome. (except i bet yours are scarred (red) like mine.) I saw online that it is a sign of anxiety or another underlying problem. They also compared it to the people who ';cut';. I think thats kind of far fetched. But I am so glad to know i'm not the only one!!! Try that for a week. Then once they look nice, it's hard to find a lift in the skin to pick at. Good luck!! I am off to but on my nails. (try broadway nails from walgreens or wal mart, cheap and nice looking)Sop biting nails and skin/cuticles around nails????
They have finger guards and also solution to put on the fingers to make them taste bad. It is an oral fixation you have and the only way you are going to stop is to stop yourself and direct the attention you put into biting your nails and cuticles into something more fun or important. Good Luck!
Also, try getting some hot tobasco sauce and rubbing a tiny bit on your nails. Once you taste it the first time, you won't bite your nails again.
Daily upkeep. Put a fresh coat of clear polish on your nails daily. Keep your nails filed and trim your cuticles. Put cuticle oil and hand lotion on nightly. I always start to gnaw when my nails get dry, out of shape and raggedy at the edges. Carry around chewing gum so you can pop some gum n your mouth when you are tempted to chew. Once your nails grow in and cuticles are healed, treat yourself to a professional manicure.

Cuticles and skin around nails tearing?

around my nails my skin is tearing and is rough and the wicks i think they are called are ripping and it really hurts...i only pick at them to try make it look neat but it makes it worse, what can i do to fix this problemCuticles and skin around nails tearing?
Moisturize. They're likely very dry.Cuticles and skin around nails tearing?
Push back your cuticles every few days to allow the nail to grow without the skin bonding to the nail. Also use a Hand %26amp; Nail moisturising cream - doesn't have to be expensive.
I have the same problem, moisturizing seems to help.
use some lotion, and dont pick at them whatsoever- never, ever

I have a problem with biting my nails...and the cuticles around them. Its goten really bad. Help me please!?

Do any of you know what I could do to just leave them alone? Besides reapplying band-aids on every finger every morning? I tried seeing the doctor and he gave me some lubriderm but it only made my fingers greasy and I couldnt even turn a door knob!I have a problem with biting my nails...and the cuticles around them. Its goten really bad. Help me please!?
I had a very big problem with biting my cuticles and the skin round them, like a nervous thing or something. Everything my doctors gave me didn't work either. So I decided to have fake nails put on at a salon. Just short ones. The way that the nails feel make it hard to pick which would then cause me to bite. They make your hands look so pretty that you won't want to mess them up by biting. It worked for me at least and in just one week the skin and cuticles have cleared up from all the scratches and so forth that I had. My hands look pretty again.

Try it and see how it works for you.I have a problem with biting my nails...and the cuticles around them. Its goten really bad. Help me please!?
current studies show nail biters are lacking in calcium. unless you think it might be a nervous disorder try increasing your calcium intake -- too easy huh?
Fake nails work but if you want to heal up the cuticles and prevent furthur biting try liquid band-aid. It puts an invisible coating over the sore and taste terrible so prevents you from biting more. I have tried every hand cream on the market to prevent the rough cuticles but nothing works.

Putting polisporin on a band-aid and applying overnight also helps healing. The liquid band-aid is the best solution I could find. Good luck
An easy ';Cure all'; would be to think of all the nasty jobs you do a day with your hands, and all the nasty germs that get under your fingernails, and the crap that is going in your mouth when you in turn bite your nails!! Nothing like scrubbing the toilet, then sitting down and munching out on those ol' fingernails afterwards!! Yummmmmmm!!!! Will power is what it takes. Whenever I wanted to bite my nails, I'd sit on my hands, or get up and start moving. Helped me!! Good luck!! :)
Go to the drug store..........It might be Sally Hansen but I am not sure there is a polish you can apply that tastes so awful.......is for nail biters!
I had the same problem when I was younger. They do have nail polish that you can put on that tastes horrid. Its really bad and you would remember EVERY time to leave your nails alone. Not sure where they still sell it, but i'm sure you could find some on the net somewhere.
This is an instant cure for any cut, pain opening of the skin. Tried and used by generations %26amp; always grab this when skin is injured-the salt from the kitchen. U think it'll hurt, but not so. Please do this after reading if have sore fingers %26amp; cuticles-a soup bowl 1/2 full of warmest water, add a teaspoon of salt %26amp; swish the fingers round in it, duck them down in it %26amp; let soak for 5-10 minutes, remove and pat dry %26amp; put any lotion as a moisturizer to cuticles %26amp; nails, rub it in, try to give the fingers a break for the day by being easy %26amp; slow on the hands.

Meantime go to a big place like walmart, Kroger,K-mart,CVS, %26amp; go to section where nail polish is located %26amp; find on a card a bottle of Stop %26amp; Grow. Apply to nails-daily,tastes horrible %26amp; you'll get them out of your mouth if starting to bite from a nervous habit...I was a horrible nail biter %26amp; stopped completely %26amp; immediately with stop %26amp; grow,$3-$5.00. Never used the bottle up,it broke my habit of nail biting.

Good Luck %26amp; just do it!
I agree with my2cents. That is what I did.
if it's wounded and painful. Try putting hot water in cup or bowl whatever and put some salt in it dip the affected finger(s) in it. Make sure the water is uncomfortably hot. Do that three times a day and watch for improvements in 3 days.
Carry a pair of nail clippers with you . any time you feel the urge to bite your nails use the clippers, instead.
You could always try just wearing gloves
have you tried putting that gross tasteing stuff on the tips of your fingers so everytime you go to chew them you get the bad taste in your mouth. I don't know if you can get it from the chemist or not but it might work
You can buy clear nail polish that is made to help people stop biting. It tastes so nasty that you won't want to put your fingers in your mouth. It worked for me.
my wife bites her nails all the time you could paint some of that yucky tasting varnish on them but my wife uses masking tape instead of plasters as it sticks better and removes temptation after two days the tape comes off file your nails so they dont catch then you have to use your will power not to bite them.
My step-mom has to get fake nails put on to help her keep her nails and cuticles intact. If you put the fake nails on and are still having problems with your cuticles, Bath and Bodyworks has cuticle creams that smooth and soften. Once your cuticles are in good shape, if you feel the need to bite them, you might want to try putting hot sauce (the hotter the better) on your cuticles. There is also something called Bitters that you can put on your cuticles that will keep you from putting your fingers in your mouth.

I have a BAD habit of biting my nails along with the skin around it on my fingers and my cuticles and it has..

made my fingers gross...the bad tasting solutions don't work...I need to do something ASAP. sometimes i bite them until it starts bleeding. I NEED TO STOP. HELPPPPPPPPP PLEASEEEEEEE.I have a BAD habit of biting my nails along with the skin around it on my fingers and my cuticles and it has..
You know, I used to do this too. Without the biting part. What I used to do was to pick at my fingers. Everytime I would get a hang nail I would tear it, and my fingers were a total mess!

For me it was a simple as wearing nail polish. I realized my fingers were too pretty and it would mess up my nail polish.

You could try that or try wrapping a bandaid or some other cloth around your fingers..

I would suggest that it is OCD. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.. by the way you say you have tried just about everything and can't seem to stop.. I have that same problem. For some reason I don't do my fingers anymore, but if I get a small mosiquito bite on my arm... I pick and pick and pick...and my arms are a total mess!

I've done it with every single blemish or scar I've EVER had...

And there are many meds for OCD. You just have to have patience with your Dr while you are trying ea and every one.I have a BAD habit of biting my nails along with the skin around it on my fingers and my cuticles and it has..
Do you bite them in your sleep? This will sound stupid, but just don't do it. I used to bite my nails. I stopped by not doing it. Every time I would put my hand up to my mouth, I told myself ';no';.

If you can't stop, perhaps there is an underlying reason why. Do you do it when you are bored? Nervous? Figure out when and why you do it and it might make it easier to quit.
Okay, first ya gotta trust me. K? K. I quit smoking after 38 years this way. Everytime I reached for one I said to myself...oh, that's right, I don't do that anymore and I would do something else. Soon I realised I hadn't had a smoke for 3 days! Now it's been 6 years, cool huh? Mind over matter my Man! You can do it! Friend2Friend, J
They make thsi stuff called ';no bite'; and you can buy it in Sally beauty supply. I never used it but I've heard that it works really good.
    Start smoking.
There r creams that make ur nail taste bad! try them

    Good luck!
Try eating gum.......lots and lots of gum, that's how I stopped biting my nails, it's hard but you can do it!

    Good luck!!
Tight your hand with a rope.

Why do my cuticles always peel? I want pretty nails but I always have hang nails!! Any help?

Lots and lots of lotion, keep them hydrated at all times. Avoid picking or peeling! Why do my cuticles always peel? I want pretty nails but I always have hang nails!! Any help?
Try filing your nail across so that they will be square at the tips and polish with a clear polish to protect them. Don't pick at them and peel off the polish either. The square look at the tips is the latest and I have found they don't break as easily. Why do my cuticles always peel? I want pretty nails but I always have hang nails!! Any help?
Biting and picking your nails pushes them into the beds and causes hangnails. I am sure there are other causes but once I stopped doing that it stopped for me. You may be lacking vitamins if they are thin.
Me too!!!!!! There's some stuff called Nail Tek and I've noticed it makes my nails so much stronger. You gotta remember to use it daily. You can find it at any beauty supply.

  • How to ultimatly stop biting my nails and cuticles!?

I've been biting my nails and cuticles since I could rememer. I've learned it from my father who til this day still bites until he bleeds. I'm about 13 and I've been biting my nails since I was bout 3. I do it when I'm watching TV when I'm nervous or bored and just thinking. I catch myself doing it mostly when I'm watching tv or talking/listening to someone talk. I don't mean to do it but I do then I notice how bad my nail looks then try to fix it by biting but in the end make it worse :( I've tried painting them using lotion using the polish solutions everything! But I've never completely stopped. I've also become very attached to my gum chewing habit and recently stopped. I can't figure out why I bit and how to stop! Is there anything that really did it for you? By the way I'm a girl.

Thanks so much--I'm just having a really hard time figuring out why I bit and how to stop! How to ultimatly stop biting my nails and cuticles!?
heey the best way i found

is well since im a boy i put a little nail clipper on my key chain

but i guess u should stick one in your purse

    worked for me

hope it works for youHow to ultimatly stop biting my nails and cuticles!?
You can use the spray stuff. I don't know what it's called but they use if for babies so they'll stop sucking there thumbs. It dosn't taste very good but it works.
Bite them off once and for all?

No, seriously, there is some nasty-tasting stuff you can paint them with. Or make them really pretty and then you won't want to bite them.
My grand dad used to say that painting on a mixture of water and chicken manure was a sure fix. :-)

But if you would like a more sanitary solution, try doing what my oldest daughter did. She began setting aside some of her money to regularly go to a nail shop to have her nails done. She wasn't interested in chewing fake nails that look pretty, so it wasn't long until she had broken the habit.
how about you put some sour lemon jucie on your nail s and if that doesnt work you can put some acryicale its the thing that make the white tip at the nail salon so when you lick it you will have this nasty taste in your mouth
If your parents would let you I might suggest getting acrylic tips put on. You can't bite them at all and your nails always look pretty, but you might be just a little bit young. I bite my nails too so I know how you feel :O(
I used to bite my nails and cuticles. I don't (usually) any more. Put hand cream and cuticle cream on regularly, if there are no little pieces of skin hanging off, there is nothing to bite. Always carry a nail file and use it regularly. You can even smooth the little hangy-off pieces of cuticle with a nail file if you have to. Keep your nails kind of short. Putting on white cotton gloves when you are watching TV will keep you from biting without thinking about it. The hardest part is just catching yourself doing it or before you do it and making yourself stop. When you catch yourself biting your nails, get up and put on some hand cream, make yourself stop biting. It will get easier after a while. I started biting my nails when I was about 6 or 7. I finally quit in my late 30s. You just have to break old habits and form new ones.

    Good luck with it.
dip your fingertips in nail remover.

    *hope this helps!!*%26lt;3
Well, all I can say is if you notice that you do it just try quiting little by little.

I have horrible nails and cuticles?

Ever since I was a little girl, I have always bitten my nails and cuticles. Until about last year my nail-biting habit stopped, now I just kind of suck on them. (Gross, I know) Unfortunately, I still bite my cuticles, which causes loose skin, which then causes me to pick at them more. I realize there are products that I can put on my nails and cuticles that'll keep me from biting them, but what can I do once I break the habit? My cuticles and nails have been practically destroyed because of so many years of biting, and I've always wanted nice, healthy nails like hand models do.I have horrible nails and cuticles?
Regular manicures will help your nails and cuticles get back in good condition you could also keep applying cuticle oil.I have horrible nails and cuticles?
rub sudocreme into them they will be shiny

    Picking at nails and cuticles........?

Ok so I know this has been asked in one form or another but everything seems to be related to biting. I don't bite. I pick at my fingernails and my cuticles. I get them down short and my cuticule area is usually red and raw where I pick and scratch at it. I do it when I'm bored or nervous. Yes I know it can be a sign of OCD but I'm looking for some simple, at-home remedies or ideas of how to stop. Please don't suggest the nasty polish because I don't bite my nails so I'll never taste it. Thanks in advance!!Picking at nails and cuticles........?
Try painting your nails or wearing fake ones. If worse comes to worst, then wear gloves. You can't pick your cuticles if they're covered! Or maybe just come up with a different habit to do when your bored. Try twidling your thumbs. Or maybe everytime you want to pick at them drink some water. In other words, just come up with something that you can replace scratching your cuticles with.Picking at nails and cuticles........?
I have the same problem. I still do it from time to time, but what really helps is to get your nails done up all pretty. Cuticles pushed back and maybe even some fake nails. It stops me for about a week, then I'm at it again.

Do you bite your nails and pick your cuticles?

How do you stop?!?!Do you bite your nails and pick your cuticles?
Yes I do both. I've tried but I think it's because I don't have the patience. Plus it's a nervous habit that I picked up from my father. My sis-in-law was able to stop, she just started taking care of her nails everyday, making sure they were well filed, trimmed, cuticles soft and push back. I've done this before too, but like I said, don't have the patience so the idea of taking care of them gets pushed aside.

I know there are nail polishes designed for this and taste awful. Although I've never tried them, I read somewhere, I think this website, someone with a bad habit was able to get used to the taste of this polish and they still continued biting them. Even regular nail polish I still bite through, including black, that's what color I usually do. And yes it does get stuck to your teeth, it's horrible...I just check a mirror and make sure I don't have any in my mouth, or around it. Any color can do this, and any brand.Do you bite your nails and pick your cuticles?
buy bad tasting nail polish and wear a little bandaid around your worst finger(s).
I do bite my nail...or i should say i did

I went to wal-mart and purchased a sally hensen product.. you put it on your nails and it taste awfull and it stays on for a while.

She also has a cuticle cream it's make you cuticle soft, it makes harder to pick at them. My nails look lot beter... but it took about 2 weeks.
Keep putting lotion on your hands that way when you go to bite your nails you will taste the lotion?? Might work.

    Good luck!
I took up smoking. I still bite my nails, but that's only when they aren't even, or when they break and I don't have nail clippers. But since I took up smoking, I stopped biting my nails. Now I need to find a habit to quit smoking. LOL

You can try dipping your hands in a powder. Baby powder, Goldbond, or even Tinactin, the athletes foot spray. Or you could try fresh cut onions. Something you can't stand the taste or smell of. Usually you'll smell something on your hand before you'll taste it when you go to bite your nails.

Once you stop one habit, you pick up another!!
one of the most common things to do is to wrap yors fingers with bandages. also, go to sally girl and get a nail strngthener, it's in clear. this will make the nail tougher and harder to bite. so the struggle won't be something you'd want to try and do usually.
Yes! I do bite my nails and its just a hibit and i get in trouble because everybody says its nasty but when i get nerves i just start bitin my nails! There is a cure for it and you can go to the parmast and get some finger nail stuff or you could save your money and use some vingure from your own cabnit ..
No Bite. Its a wonderful, cheap product that you can buy from Sally's Beauty Supply. Its a clear polish that you just apply when you need, but it has a very weird smell that you should be very concerned about putting it in your mouth. Its not harmful like a polish if you do tend to bite them and swallow-GROSS! As for your cuticles, you must be picking at them because they are dry. Try Solar Oil or Solar Balm from Creative Nail Design. Its a little costly but works the best. You can buy it at nail salons or maybe at your Sally's. If this doesnt work- Try hot sauce!!
    I don't do either.
    cut your fingers off
yes I was in your shoes just a couple months ago, but my nails and cuticles were so bad I had tto go to the doctor and they said go to the drug store and buy this nail polish called pucker and it is so bitter and sour you will never bite your nails again.
black nail polish...who wants it to chip and stick to their teeth

Sounds like you should stop getting your nails done. I can't see that being worth the ';look'; of ';nice'; nails.

    Try being natural.

im havin the same problem too. i even went to consult from a skin doctor. but the cream didnt helped much. sally hansen's curticle massage cream is the only solution to my prob. it soften, moisture your curticles and renew them! it really works on me. even on the first application you could get a satisfisfactory result. try it out! browse through the website: www.sallyhansen.com hope this really helps!

Sounds like you might have a fungus. Try any of the over the counter fungus meds for the amount of time given for treatment on the box.

In the mean time, use vaseline on your hands and put white gloves on them while you sleep. This method will soften the skin to make it less prone to tearing.

    Good Luck!

i know i ruin my nails by doing it ..so im trying to break my habit.

Also when i remove my nail color (dark red) i have it stained on my nails...

is there anyway i can get the stains off and how can i prevent it??

Dip your fingers in nail polish. It tastes bad, so you will most likely try to stop.

Red nail polish is known for staining, so try pink or something else. Save red for when you need it.Severely cracked nails and cuticles.?
I know it's hard but if you want to fix your cuticles you have got to leave them alone. no picking or biting. trim carefully with a cuticle scissor or trimmer when needed %26amp; keep hand cream on. use base coat under red or dark polish, that's all you need to fix that. remove stains gradually by gently and lightly buffing once a week.

never heard of this symptom at all thats kinda odd try using some lotion your skin might just be really dry. but good luck and congrats!7wks prego and weird itchig on my gums and cuticles [my nails]?
I get a tingly sensation in my gums that feels like itching almost. I usually ';scratch'; with the toothbrush then rinse with Listerine...it seems to help. I didn't have the nail symptoms, but everyone is different.
Could be a symptom of justational diabetes.

(Only occurs when you are pregnant)
I havent heard of that happening to anyone. I've had my palms be red and itchy but never my gums and around my nails. I think you would have to ask a doctor about this one.

Can you guys give me any good tips on how to have healthy nice nails and cuticles?

Skin color around nails and cuticles..?

My daughters skin color around her nails and cuticles is darker than the rest of her. Is this common in ALL babies, or just biracial babies? Is this what color she will be, or is it just a myth? She is biracial.Skin color around nails and cuticles..?
My daughter is half puerto rican and half black at first she was light skinned but now she is darker and yes it is normal it gets a little bit darker than her skin tone nothing wrong with it their nails also turn yellowish too especially their toe nails don't know why but it just happens after time. Hope this helps.

  • How do i soften my cuticles and get rid of raggy nails ?

Use a cuticle remover to soften them and get rid of old, dry hang nails. Use a cuticle trimmer to trim off any hang nails that stick out. Do not cut off all of your cuticles; only trim off the dry part.

OPI's Avoplex cuticle remover is the best one. Just apply it and leave on for 5 minutes. Rinse your nails %26amp; rub off the excess cuticle w/ a wash cloth.

Use a cuticle balm or nail oil to moisturize them.

(ex. Solar Oil, OPI Avoplex) Vit E oil, jojoba oil, Aquaphor Healing Ointment, Vaseline or plain Chapstick will work too.

Use a moisturizing soap to wash your hands %26amp; apply lotion throughout the day.How do i soften my cuticles and get rid of raggy nails ?
you can soften your cuticles by applying a cuticle oil and letting it sit for 5 to 10 minutes and taking a orange stick wrapped in cotton and gently push your cuticles back for a instant manicure! How do i soften my cuticles and get rid of raggy nails ?
go and find yourself a manicurist and they will show you how to look after your hands, and you can have a treatment at the same time
File nails carefully in one direction and do cuticles after shower or bath then hand cream one for hands and nails probably best

Rubber band around my wrist (snap it every time i chew)

Tabasco on my nails %26amp; cuticles (so my mouth will burn each time I chew)

Fake nails (I still bit my cuticles, %26amp; the nails just were too intrusive so I didn't have them on long)

I'm really trying to grow my nails out so they'll look nice for the holidays. Right now they're REALLY short, almost as far down as they can go!

Any advice? How can I stop biting my nails %26amp; cuticles??
Ok im 19 and I have been biting my nails since I was like at least 4 years old and would always get in trouble but I would still do it cause I got use to it. So anyways I went to a beauty school for 2 years and I went to a competition about hair, nails and ect. and since my nails were so short and UGLY I had to put fake nails on so whenever i took them off I notice they a grew a little and well my BF mom said in order to keep them growing and from biting them she told me to by this polish the name of it is OPI its called

    original nail envy it

GOOD LUCKHow can I stop biting my nails %26amp; cuticles??
Get a good manicure kit. keep it near you. Everytime you think you are going to bite, use the nail file instead. Spend the time you would use biting, taking care of your nails instead. Massage the cuticles with vasoline or lotion, so they are soft and harder to bite. Keep lotion on your hands. Everytime you catch yourself biting, put lotion on instead! It worked for me---become obsessive about taking care of your nails!
There is this special nail polish you can buy that tastes horrible when you bite your nails. It is super bitter and almost tast like battery acid lol. You could buy it at any drug store.
do what i did...dip the tips of ur fingernails in nail polish remover...when u try to bite, the taste will keep u from biting any further...

Cutting your cuticles makes your nails grow faster??

Is it true?Cutting your cuticles makes your nails grow faster??
I agree. Do not cut your cuticles. It will not help your nails at all, but it can lead to an infection. And the cuticle will grow back thicker than it was.Cutting your cuticles makes your nails grow faster??
    false
    wouldnt that hurt? :S
probably not. and you really shouldn't cut your cuticles. That can lead to infection. It is better to push them back with a cuticle tool instead.

Anyone used to chew nails and tear up cuticles but quit? Do you have tips on how to stop

I went through the same thing. I actually quit about 4 months ago. What I did, was, I got nail clippers and carried them around with me. Then I consciously told myself not to do that. Every time I would catch myself biting or picking I would stop. Then, if there was a hangnail, I would clip it off. I would also clip my nails if there was a piece that was tempting me to pick or bite it. After a while, it became easier and easier to just not do it. It became my new habit not to. I haven't done it ever since. It's a very tough habit to break and it took me multiple tries before I finally found a way to get it to work. Hope this helps!Anyone used to chew nails and tear up cuticles but quit? Do you have tips on how to stop
know that you make it easier to be infected with warts by messing with your fingers like that. tearing up cuticles and hangnails. you don't want warts on your fingers, do you? and if you get warts on your fingers and you bite the nails it could be transferred to your face O_o

    ETA

yes i know warts are caused by viruses but messing with your fingers and damaging the protective layer gives warts an easier entranceAnyone used to chew nails and tear up cuticles but quit? Do you have tips on how to stop
I haven't but I know that there is this stuff that you can buy to put on your nails so that when you go to chew them, they taste nasty! So that should help you stop :)
I used to chew on my nails, but I can't since I got braces. You could use finger nail polish remover on your fingers and just spread it on. since it tastes really bad you won't chew nails and cuticles.
What I did was every time I bit my nail I would pinch or slap myself really hard. you could also cut them or file them as soon as they start growing so you can't cut them.
I dont do that but i hear if you put fingernail polish on you will most likely stop. If you dont like to paint your fingernails just use a clear coat. Hope that helps :)

paint your nails with clear nailpolish.
try using a nail file instead of biting

    warts are caused by viruses
paint your nails with pepper spray, cayenne pepper.

Treat yourself to a manicure periodically. They feel great and make you feel really pampered. :)Because of my job, i now have rough skin, damaged cuticles %26amp; dirty nails . what can i do to fix this?
Hmm well I think you should try facial scrub on your face, and on your fingers. If that doesn't work soak your fingers in like nail polish remover, or you might have to get them professionally done at salon. Also apply a lot of lotion to get smooth skin!! drink a lot of water and milk too.
id say just take a bath everyday and keep them trimmed. i heard on the tyra show if you put olive oil on your cuticles, there replenish. and thats cooking olive oil.

    Chewing nails and cuticles?

I chew both my nails and the cuticles. They look bad and dry. I can't even really paint my nails. My mom doesn't know where to go to get them done, and my mom doesn't want to go to a normal salon because the beauty school my sister goes to doesn't teach how to cut cuticles. Help?Chewing nails and cuticles?
first just a lil education: you dont cut cuticles you think your nails look bad now cut your cuticles and they will look even worse....some ppl think that if they cut their cuticles that will make their hands look neater...well i'm here to tell you it doesnt....it will however make you continue to get them cut....you are prone to all types of infections and disease if you do this....its not cute or attractive to cut your cuticles....anyone in the nail industry knows this and some states its illegal but ppl still want it done....i cant figure that out for the life of me....anyways get regular manicures(and if your sister is going to school then go there so she can have someone to practice services on)and if the school she is attending doesnt teach cuticle cutting then chances are its illegal where you are.....that's a GREAT school.....you push back your cuticles NEVER EVER cut!!!!!Chewing nails and cuticles?
put a rubber band on your hand and everytime you bite your nails/cuticuls flick yourself with the rubber band. This is how i stopped biting my nails.
well you probably want to put vinigare on your nails so when ever you start to chew on them you will stop because it taste disgusting
I hope you realize how filthy, nasty and dirty your hands are while chewing on them! I'm not being ugly or anything, but in this day and time, there is so much disease and so many germs floating about, how could you ever put your fingers to your mouth?

Try to stop this bad habit at once, buy some amlactin lotion (walgreens and cvs have it), and start being kind to your hands!

Give your hands time to heal and then go to a nail technician. Best of Luck!

try doing your nails really nicely, as in going to a salon or doing them your self. file the edges and get your cuticles moisturized and trimmed (if absolutely necessary). i ind that i your nails are smooth, you don't bite them. i stopped biting mine in the third grade, and that was some time ago! try to make your hands noticeable and be proud of your fingers. good luck!!I have a real issue with my nails and cuticles! what should I do to stop bitting them??
Im in the same boat as you with the cuticles. What has worked for me is i wear gloves at night, the kind they have at bath and body works or skin care places that keep lotion on your hands. I put a lotion or 100% shea butter on them then put the gloves on. They are softer in the morn so im not as likely to pick at them. I dont bite my nails anymore- i used to get manicures or paint them with a nude color so it would taste bad or i didnt want to bite them cause i spent $$ on the mani. good luck
i have the same problem. there is some nail polish that if you bite ur nails it burns ur mouth. i didnt wanna do that so i just paint my nails all the time because i dont bite my nails when their painted. its just seens too ewww. but whatever you think works best for you.
I have the same problem too and what helps me is acrylic nails that you get done at the nail salon. It really makes your hands look nicer.
They sell this stuff called ';nail biter solution'; or something. Put that on your nails and it will taste really gross and make you not want to do it.

Is fingernail polish bad for your nails? what is the healthiest treatment for nails and cuticles?

I think the real damage comes from using nail polish remover, using it only a couple of times a week is ok, using it too much can dry out your nails and the skin around them. A simple way of taking care of your nails:

1)Use a nail buffer to smoothen your nails and make them shiny. From experience this also seesm to make nails grow faster.

2)Dip your hands in warm water for 5 minutes. Then dry them out and gently push back the cuticles with a wooden cuticle stick. Clip them carefully.

3)Apply moisturiser and massage onto your nails and cuticles. Rub thoroughly to let it absorb in.

4)Apply a clear nail hardener to your nails. There's one I use called Nail Xtras 3 in 1. It looks just like clear nail polish.

5)If you have long nails try tapping them. I heard that this is supposed to improve circulation and help them grow. In anycase it won't do any harm.Is fingernail polish bad for your nails? what is the healthiest treatment for nails and cuticles?

I cut my cuticles, will my nails grow?

I cut my cuticles (on my finger nails) and I'm really worried my nails won't grow. :(

Thank you very much :)I cut my cuticles, will my nails grow?
Your nails will continue to grow, but it's best to leave your cuticles as it is. Push them back if you think that they are unattractive, but they're quite useful. They keep the bad stuff from getting into the roots of your nails and keep it from getting infected.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!(:

I've heard that ridged fingernails and ragged, peeling cuticles is a vitamin deficiancy... so what vitamin are you missing if that's so?Vitamin deficiancy? ridged nails + peeling cuticles?

A question about your nails and cuticles.?

I push my cuticles back every day soak my hands in milk and honey, use lotion. try not to pain tmy nails much but if i do its french maicure. Okay any ways. my nails grow to be about a half inch and i want them to be longer and if i try to let them grow longer they break off, It makes me really mad haha. And I have tried sally hanson hard as nails. I have tried using super gule and krazy glue on the inside of my nails so they dont break. It worked for awhile. But im tired of reapplying it everyday because it just chips off. Any ideas tips of help will be greatly useful thankss muchh %26lt;3A question about your nails and cuticles.?
half an inch seems pretty long to me specially since they are real nails...i have real hard nails and they grow so long..and i get lazy to file them so i just clip them all off...lmfao right down...when i get overly frustrated...to be honest i liked them as a teen but now they kind of annoy me....ya anyways...whats wrong with half a inch...any longer then that would seem witchy to me...haha..i dont think there is anything you can do to make your nails grow harder...except the things you are already trying....if your nails are breaking on their own at that point...they probably arent ment to go any longer...A question about your nails and cuticles.?
Don't do the glue anymore. If you want, you can try finding a manicurist that does silk wrapping. All they do is lay a thin layer of silk on your nail and buff it up with maybe a clear coat. This will help strengthen your nail and help keep them from breaking so that they grow. Good luck, hope this helps!!
the nail glue has weakened your nails. lay off glue for 2-3 months for them to grow out.

What do nail techs think about yucky looking cuticles?

I have a very bad habit of picking my cuticles and the skin around my nails, most of all on my thumbs. (Apparently this is actually some sort of OCD, which doesn't surprise me since it's totally compulsive - I just can't stop.) I would like to start getting my nails done again - I used to get them done and that actually helped me to stop, since my nails were looking nice, and also, I was embarrassed to let the nail tech see them in that condition. But they are so bad now, I can't imagine what anyone who got a good look at them would think. (My boyfriend is constantly telling me to stop and that they look disgusting.) So if there are any nail techs out there, I would especially like to hear from you! What do nail techs think about yucky looking cuticles?
I'm an esthetician/nail tech, and believe me, we don't judge your body/appearance when we perform services like manis/pedis, or body massages, etc.

I've heard a lot of people say they ';can't'; get a massage or some such service because they're too fat/ too skinny, but really, we aren't looking at you like that.

If someone goes to the doctor when they have something wrong with their body, the doctor doesn't go ';ew, rash';. They just treat the problem. It's the same thing for nails techs.

We work on skinny people, fat people, toned people, wrinkly people, people with nail fungus, warts etc, but we just shrug and get to work.

And honestly, when I see someone with raggedy cuticles, I go ';Woohoo, clean up time.'; It makes the job more interesting.

If you're really self-conscious about it, though, you should try to stop doing it! :) If that's impossible, going in for weekly/bi-monthly manicures might help you stop, if you can afford it. (When your hands%26amp;nails look so nice, you won't want to pick at them :) )

Really, I've seen much worse than raggedy cuticles, so please don't stress about it! If you want a mani, just go and get one. :)What do nail techs think about yucky looking cuticles?
    they may look bad but don't be embarrassed because trust me no matter how bad yours look remember they have seen worse i'm sure of it!!!!!! try to make a joke about it as soon as they take your hands like ';don't be afraid of them, ha ha, bad habit i know!!';
    nahh,,,they see it everyday

plus i dont think its disgusting comparing to other people

like when the nail tech have to clean their feet

    hehe im just saying

go ahead and get it done

just give her some nice tip before u leave :)
If they're professional they shouldn't judge.

I have split and peeling cuticles, however my nails are strong. Do I have any vitamin or calcium deficancy.?

Will cuticle oil help ?I have split and peeling cuticles, however my nails are strong. Do I have any vitamin or calcium deficancy.?
I've had this problem for YEARS! I'd been to dermatologists galore and they just kept giving me different creams to try.

    I finally found an OTC hand lotion that helps tremendously: It's called ';Curel Targeted Therapy Fast-Absorbing Hand %26amp; Cuticle Cream.';

It's not cheap ($5 per 3.5 oz tube), but you don't need a lot of it. Just be sure to put it on after every hand washing and apply it liberally right before bedtime. It works wonders!

Nail polish and getting rid of cuticles?

is there a simple way of getting rid of cuticles? the way nail polish looks over cuticles is ugly!! and it takes forever to paint my nails if i have to clip off my cuticles first and that may sound like a bad idea but just pushing them back only hides them for a couple hours. then they appear over the nail polish and look even worse. is there a way to get rid of them completely and for good? if not, what is the best and quickest way of getting rid of them so i can paint my nails?Nail polish and getting rid of cuticles?
Soak your hands for about 15 minutes. Put some cuticle oil on[ read the directions] then push your cuticles back with a orange stick. After a few weeks they will look great. Never cut them, it looks bad and can cause infection.Nail polish and getting rid of cuticles?
the best way to get rid of cuticles is to get a cuticle softener, but first soak ur hand in water for a few minutes and then put those cuticle softener on your finger, then you can start push them back, if any cuticle are seem noticeable just clip them off with cuticle nipper, don't overly doing it because you can cut yourself, after that you can put cuticle oil on your finger nails for about 5 to 10 mins, it's better if you can follow it up with parafin wax....good luck....

My nails are turning yellow around the cuticles, near the edges, but not the actual nail just the skin around?

it. But i recently started eating more sugar than usual and drinking a ton of that diet lipton green tea stuff. I'm going to try taking some more multi-vitamins. But why is this? What can I do to help it?My nails are turning yellow around the cuticles, near the edges, but not the actual nail just the skin around?
The trick to healthy nails, cuticals, and hair is your vitamin intake. Vitamin E is essential. If you increased your sugar, decrease it back to where it was or less. Increase vitamins A, E, D. Also, if you have ridges in your nails that is a sign of vitamin deficiency. It's all about your intake. If you where a lot of nail polish, that's nor especially healthy either. Take a break from that.

Good Luck.My nails are turning yellow around the cuticles, near the edges, but not the actual nail just the skin around?
try eating protein and other things other then just apples and tea you body is probably deprived of something so to show that your fingers are turning yellow, don't drink diet lipton green tea there are sugers in there that are really bad for you. Anything diet is bad for you because they put something in there that is bad but I can't think of it right now.
Smokers get that yellowish tinge around that part of their fingers...

Could be that? you didnt mention if you were or not.

  • I have a bad habit of biting my nails/cuticles and the skin around my nails...how can i stop this immediately?

Nail biting is a form of stress relief. You need to find something else to do. Carry a stress ball or other object with you, and when you find yourself gnawing a finger, use the stress ball instead util you can wean yourself from the habit. I used one of those clicker things, and when I found myself biting, I would click the clicker and make lots of fun obnoxious noise. :)

Also try one of the nail biter formulas you can buy in the drugstore. I didn't have much luck with them, but they did keep me aware of when I was biting my nails so I would stop.I have a bad habit of biting my nails/cuticles and the skin around my nails...how can i stop this immediately?
start a new habit of scratchin' your crack.I have a bad habit of biting my nails/cuticles and the skin around my nails...how can i stop this immediately?
I do this also and I have found that getting a manicure or nail put one if your female usually helps or you can look for this stuff made by sally Hansen called nail bitter (it's a awful tasting liquid you put on fingers) or put something spicy on your finger you won't be biting them then.

But the manicure really works best since the nail person clean up you nails and cuticles and I use a cuticle clipper all the time I carry it everywhere I go so instead of biting I use it.
put them in nail polish remover like a couple of times a day.the taste is really gross so yeah
Microbes are heavily infested on the cuticles!!! Millions of the little buggers. Also, you can get infections by compromising the skin in that area. How's that?
start chewing unsweetened gum or try a toothpick. worked for me.
go see a doctor, they may have medicine for that type of habit.

What you're describing could be caused by a immune-mediated disease called Lupoid Onychodystrophy; this is a pretty rare condition, but Shepherds are one of the breeds that it is seen more commonly in.

The best advice I can offer is that you ask your vet for a referral to a veterinary dermatologist. Whether this is the cause of your dog's problems or not, I don't know, but it sounds like her's is a case for a specialist regardless.

Lupoid onychodystrophy can be treated- I believe usually with a combination of fatty acid supplementation and cortisone- and the nails can regrow if intensive treatment is put in place.

I hope that helps, and that you find an answer to her problems. Please feel free to email if I can be of any more help :o)
Is it all your dog's nails or just the dewclaws?

A few of the dogs I have/had constantly get their dewclaws torn, split, dangling,... painful, even took to vet to check coz one dog was on 3 legs fr. the pain.

The 1st reply is valid with all the questions and statements.

Is she on hard surface/pavement alot, is she lacking vitamins, etc.

How old is your dog and how long has this condition been with her?

Vets have not seen before? Well, what did they say? Their educated guess? How many vets did you see?

You were kinda vague in your question.
I hope you don't make the dog run or jog with you! It sounds but I am just guessing that the poor dog has to run distances on pavement as I see happening a lot, or in some other way is having her paws damaged.

Do you clip her claws or are they getting too long? Dogs need to have their claws clipped by a professional regularly, some dogs more so than others. Is she getting rough treatment somehow?

I would switch foods or give her some meat, like raw chicken every day. It sounds like she may not be getting enough protien in her diet.

Does she stay in a fenced yard a lot? Could she be pawing at a chain link fence a lot or digging?

Did the vet do any blood tests, like for underactive thyroid gland? I would take her to a different vet, one that someone has recommended as being good. There are many bad vets out there.

I bite my nails all the time. They are peeling to my cuticles in little sections. Is the something to help?

I can't afford to buy the stuff from the store so is there anything that is natural I can make at home to use on my nails?I bite my nails all the time. They are peeling to my cuticles in little sections. Is the something to help?
Simple, but hard work: It just takes constant willpower to stop biting your nails. You need to be aware of each time that you feel like biting your nails, and figure out in that situation something else you can do instead. For example, each time that you feel like biting your nails, take out a nail file and just gently smooth the edge of the nail, and the urge will pass. Also, make sure you are using hand lotion after each time you wash your hands, which will keep your hands and nails moisturized. You should generally keep your nail edges filed smooth, so that there are no little bits that are tempting to start to bite, and there are no rough parts that will snag on things or break off. After a couple of days you will start to see the difference in the health of your nails, and then you just have to keep at it every day. After about 2 months of not biting your nails, that actually becomes your new habit, and you just have to stay on top of those situations where you want to go back to the comfort of the habit of biting and keep dealing with it.I bite my nails all the time. They are peeling to my cuticles in little sections. Is the something to help?

Just visualize/realize how EXTREMELY nasty it is under your fingernails. Probably the dirtiest part of your body. Just think about every public surface you touch, every handrail that has had someones greasy, sweaty, bacteria ridden lard (that probably smells of bacon)rubbed against it and then you come along and rub your little fingers all over it and then stick them right in your mouth. Yummm.

Whenever you see someone in the mall picking their nose, just know that everybody picks there nose sometimes and everybody touches everything that you touch at the mall and so by indirect degrees you essentially eat microscopic pieces of everyone else's boogers whenever you bite your fingers nails after visiting the mall (or any place with other people in it).

Once you truly realize that this happens everyday, you will stop biting your nails.

get a manicure!!!Really bad hang nails and cuticles?
Try getting on a biotin supplement and make sure to eat protein rich foods (beans and meats, of course). Even a daily vitamin will help. Other than that, there are some products like a paint on nail strengthener that will help. Good luck!
Try eating more protein. That'll help your nails grow stronger.
    u luk cool..!!

  • Will olive oil and pushing your cuticles back make your nails grow longer?

Ive been biting my nails since I was 4 and today I decided that I'm going to stop biting them! Will olive oil and pushing your cuticles back really make your nails longer??? and if so tell me howWill olive oil and pushing your cuticles back make your nails grow longer?
I dont recommend Olive Oil. It'll smell funny and there's no need for that. I went to the pharmacy, bought a small bottle of vitamin E oil and I massage that around my cuticles whenever I feel like it. The key isn't the oil (that's merely for moisture), it's the MASSAGING of the nail bed that helps stimulate growth. Will olive oil and pushing your cuticles back make your nails grow longer?
i strongly recommend hair, skin, and nail pills. you can get them at an vitamin store, and they are so good for you. reduces breakouts, makes your hair and nails grow faster, and just generally makes you feel healthier. they smell bad, but are tasteless.
Never heard about the olive oil thing or pushing cuticles back to make nails grow. I've had a nail bitting problem since i was like 7 years old (now 20). It's all about will power. My nails are strong and long right now but when I'm stressed or have high anxiety I mow my nails down so fast its not even right. lol. I also been taking pills to make my nails and hair grow by Avon. I know what it's like but don't get discouraged if you relapse.

    *Fight the urge!
Non-sense ! But if you eat well and drink plenty of water, that might help. Everyone's nails grow at a different rate.
im not sure if olive oil will, but i know if you buy plain non flavored jello and make it that should hep yuor nails grow
I don't know about making your nails grow longer, but olive oil really helps moisturize and it makes your nails glow (ok, shine). Pushing back your cutlicles makes your nails look longer, but I don't know if it actually helps to make them grow. Dark nail polish makes your nails appear longer, too (though pearly, pastely colors make your nails look shorter). Hope this helps!
yes it will help also file your nails alittle bit each day it makes them grow long and strong, and put some clear nail polish on, take it off everyother day and reapply it.
well, i don't know about olive oil. but pushing your cuticles back does help. i stopped a few years ago and i've been pushing my cuticles back and my nails are really long now.

my aunt got me onto somehting called Nail Life. I buy it at Sally's and have been using it for years. I have been told my nails look fake at times.
One way is to have a manicure . They can work with ur nails and make them look great. And its ok for guys to go. My sister is a Nail Tech and does mine and they always get complements. For ur cuticles oil oil oil is the best. Make sure u push them back everyday and oil or just use hand lotion. Never cut them thats bad. Many dudes have there nails done u just dont have to tell anyone. I like nice hands on a guy.
I would suggest Vaseline healthy hand and nail lotion which can be bought at Walgreens. It is made just for hands and cuticles. The price is less than $5.00.
    Fake ones
well at walmart or any drug store there is this nice thing with green tea in it, im not sure what the name is but it really helps them grown fast and stronger. and for the cuticles you just have to get rid of them every few weeks.
    vitamins :)
take some Silicia Gel, drink some geletin like unflavored KNOX or jello gelatin before it gels.

How to sort my nail out? its really rough around my cuticles and when i mouisturize it doesn't stay smooth?

thanksHow to sort my nail out? its really rough around my cuticles and when i mouisturize it doesn't stay smooth?
either go for a manicure becuase they will know how to treat your condition. Part of having a manicure is to treat minor skin and nail condition's that arn't infectious or medical obviously like split cuticle or dry skin.

I don't mean to sound racist but from a salon that arn't just there to paint nails like with the vietnemese people.

If this isn't an option for you one of the treatments we learn about at colledge for dry cuticle and nails is to heat almond/ olive oil so it is comfortably hot ( the hotter the better tho) and leave your nails and cuticle to soak in the oil for 10 minutes or longer if you have the time, like whilst watching a film would really help it penetrate into your skin.

After this use the excess oil to massage into your skin with deep circular movement's.

Oh yeah i forgot to say how we heat the oil....its buy having a bowl of oil floating in a bigger bowl of hot water, take it out when its hot and dip your fingers in it.How to sort my nail out? its really rough around my cuticles and when i mouisturize it doesn't stay smooth?
    get a vitamn E capsule

cheaper than a tub of the cream

and rub that into the cuticles

and have you seen these nail blocks,

one side is white, one is purple and one is black,(so is the last one)

and you buff your nails with each side and it makes your nails look lke they have clear polish on?

the polished look lasts approx 2 weeks. they are great for making your nails smooth, as well as keeping your cuticles down, as the buffung sorts them out

    well worth buying and using

just use the capsules to give you an extra head start
